The suburb of Hawthorn has been a municipality of Melbourne since 1860 and a City since 1890. From 1843 land sales were first conducted out of a newly established township of Hawthorn. Public transport played a significant role in developing the Hawthorn region from a dormitory suburb during the 1880’s, to it’s now significant status in the Melbourne community. However, it has taken until 2017 to establish a Hawthorn storage HUB in this ever expanding landscape of Melbourne. With the establishment of Kennards Self Storage at 453 Auburn Road, Hawthorn, the local Hawthorn, Camberwell, Canterbury, Kew, Burwood & South Yarra community’s will experience a significant new chapter in the historical landscape of Hawthorn.
Hawthorn is well known for its prominent sporting clubs such as the Grace Park Tennis Club, independent schools such as Camberwell Grammar, MLC Ladies College, and Scotch College, and the Hawthorn AFL Football Club. From the 1990’s parking congestion and the redevelopment of Hawthorn’s landmark sites combined to make planning an ongoing and contentious community issue.
Kennards Storage at Hawthorn have undertaken to developing their new storage site combining underground basement storage and upper level storage areas accessed via lifts, to establish individually alarmed storage units which enables local residents and commercial businesses the ability to access stored goods 24/7. Flexible storage access times will certainly ease local traffic congestion during the day. Without the need for developers to build expansive high rise apartment buildings, the Kennards Storage development and storage concept commences a new chapter in the history of Hawthorn.
The new storage facility is being built on the now vacated Cabrini Hospital site in Auburn Road, Hawthorn. Previously utilised as a Government Ordinance Factory during the second World War, a PMG (Telstra) technical training school, the existing site was left vacant for approximately 10 years until purchased by the Catholic Church and used as an administration and dry cleaning factory. Kennards Self Storage purchased the site in 2016.
