Construction Commences for Kennards New Storage centre in Mittagong

2Kennards Self Storage MittagongKennards Self Storage has commenced construction on a new $4 million Self Storage Centre in Mittagong.

The company secured the property in 2012 and has since successfully gained approval from Wingecarribee Council.

The development will be undertaken in stages. When complete it will boast 550 storage spaces and over 6,000 square metres of rentable space.

Kennards were surprised to learn that Wingecarribee Council were about to list the properties small cottage as a place of heritage importance. In response, Kennards collaborated with Council, changed design and have re-used the cottage in the plans.

The Chessington Cottage has significance as a Victorian stone residence. Built by George Stringer (1841 – 1923), a wagoner, miner and farmer from Warwick, England. Stringer bought the land in 1876 after arriving in Mittagong in 1873. Stringer died in 1923 and is buried in Welby Cemetery.

Kennards has a long history of adaptive re-use of old buildings. Council also offered some relaxation of planning controls to assist with the process. The outcome is retention of an over 100 year old stone cottage with a new life as a self storage office.

Kennards Mittagong centre is due to open this summer. It is located at the corner of Old Hume Highway and Owen Street.

The centre will be monitored and recorded with a digital CCTV system. The security will include PIN controlled access and individually alarmed spaces.

The arrival of Kennards Self Storage in Mittagong means residents and businesses of the Southern Highlands will now finally be able to choose the same quality of self storage found in major metropolitan areas.
