I have been working as a fly in fly out worker in the mines in Western Australia for a few years now.  When I first started in Western Australia I was paying off my apartment in Newcastle and would spend two weeks at work and two weeks back in Newcastle.

I thought to myself I do not want any real commitments in Newcastle other than the mortgage on the apartment and my friends. So I decided to rent out my apartment, let it pay for itself. I just needed to empty out the apartment of my things.  After some investigating I found the best option was to keep my things in storage so when I do come back to Newcastle which was then going to be every month or so I would have access to them.

I could then travel on my two weeks off to anywhere I liked. At the time lots of guys from the mine site would go to Bali for two weeks as it was only three and a half hours by plane and was relatively cheap. I went there a few times as well as going to Singapore, Cambodia and Vietnam. 

This gave me a great opportunity to travel while still paying off my apartment in Newcastle. When I was back in Newcastle I would stay with friends so I had no real costs in accommodation.

Thank goodness I took this opportunity because once Covid hit Australia I was stuck in Western Australia and was unable to travel back to Newcastle for over 12 months due to the fear of not being able to return if boarders closed.
