The future of construction is looking bright, and we’re proud to play a part in shaping it!
At Kennards Self Storage, we believe that creating opportunities for women to explore different career paths is essential to building a more inclusive and diverse workforce. Recently, we welcomed Zamira, a Year 10 student, for a week of work experience with our Property Development Team through the Tomorrow’s Women in Construction program in partnership with Western Sydney University. (Pictured left with Michaela Endicott, Design Manager at Kennards Self Storage).
The experience gave Zamira a valuable opportunity to discover the exciting world of property development, gain practical insights into the construction industry and see how projects progress from initial ideas to completed spaces.
For many young people, choosing a future career can feel like a big decision. Having the opportunity to experience a workplace first-hand can make all the difference, helping students discover new interests, develop confidence and understand the range of opportunities available to them.
During her week with our Property Development Team, Zamira experienced several aspects of the industry. From attending project meetings to visiting construction sites, she gained an understanding of the planning, collaboration and problem-solving involved in bringing property projects to life.
She also had the opportunity to put her creativity into practice by developing a floor plan for a new meeting room. This hands-on activity allowed her to explore how design decisions can influence the functionality and use of a space, while giving her a glimpse into the practical responsibilities of working in property development.
These experiences demonstrate that careers in construction and property development involve much more than what happens on a building site. They can encompass design, planning, project management, communication, teamwork and strategic thinking.
By seeing these different responsibilities in action, Zamira could begin to understand how her own skills and interests might translate into a future career.
The construction industry offers a wide range of career opportunities, yet young women may not always have the chance to explore these pathways while they are still at school.
Initiatives such as Tomorrow’s Women in Construction help bridge this gap by connecting students with real workplaces and professionals who can share their knowledge, experience and insights.
For Zamira, spending time with our Property Development Team provided an opportunity to ask questions, observe industry professionals and learn about the different roles that contribute to successful property projects.
Experiences like these can help challenge assumptions about traditional career paths and encourage young women to consider opportunities they may not have previously imagined.
At Kennards Self Storage, we recognise the importance of creating an environment where people can learn, grow and explore their potential. Welcoming students into our workplace is one way to help introduce the next generation to the possibilities available within the property and construction sectors.
We are proud to support initiatives that give young women greater access to practical learning experiences and opportunities to explore their interests.
Supporting women in the workplace starts with creating opportunities at every stage of their professional journey. This includes encouraging young women to explore careers, helping emerging professionals build their skills and fostering workplaces where women can continue to develop and progress.
At Kennards Self Storage, supporting working women’s careers is an important part of encouraging a workplace culture where people have the opportunity to contribute their ideas, build experience and pursue their professional goals.
While Zamira is at the beginning of her career journey, her experience highlights why early exposure to different industries matters. Introducing young women to career opportunities before they leave school can help them make informed decisions about their education, training and future employment.
Work experience can also provide valuable connections with professionals who can offer guidance and insight into the realities of working in a particular field.
For a working woman already established in her career, access to professional development, supportive colleagues and opportunities to take on new responsibilities can also play an important role in career growth.
By encouraging women to explore their potential and helping create pathways into traditionally male-dominated industries, businesses can contribute to a more diverse and inclusive workforce.
One of the most valuable aspects of work experience is the opportunity to connect classroom learning with the workplace.
Students can see how communication, mathematics, creativity and problem-solving are used in everyday professional situations. They can also develop a better understanding of workplace expectations, collaboration and the importance of asking questions.
Zamira’s week with our Property Development Team offered a practical introduction to these skills. Whether attending meetings, exploring construction sites or creating a floor plan, each activity provided a different perspective on how property projects are managed and delivered.
Experiences like these can help young people recognise their strengths, discover new interests and feel more confident about considering unfamiliar career paths.
They also give businesses an opportunity to share their knowledge and help inspire future generations of talent.
We believe that encouraging curiosity and providing opportunities to learn are valuable steps towards building a stronger future for the construction and property development industries.
We loved having Zamira join us and were delighted to share a glimpse into the work of our Property Development Team.
Her experience is a reminder that the future of construction depends not only on the projects we build today, but also on the people we inspire along the way.
Through opportunities such as this, Kennards Self Storage is proud to help young women explore their interests, learn from experienced professionals and discover the many possibilities available within the industry.
Thank you, Zamira, for spending the week with us. We wish you every success as you continue exploring your future career possibilities.
