Global video game revenue has surged to $179.7 billion in 2020, according to IDC data. In one of the industry's most profitable years to date, video games managed to earn more than both movie theatres and sporting events combined in 2020. This is significantly higher than both the movie industry (which grossed over $100 billion in 2019) and sports (which maxed out at over $75 billion this year).

It is estimated 2.7 billion gamers around the world and their demographic is changing all the time. Gone are the days where the gamer profile fits into the 16-25 year old demographic. The surge in users in part is attributed to the global pandemic keeping people from going out doors freely. The surge in users and therefore revenue has led to more variety in gaming. This is making it more attractive to different age groups and to both men and woman.
