Rain, Rain, Go Away!

April 12, 2021 by Antone Boustani

“This will be a very difficult week for hundreds of thousands of Australians, if not more, as we face the immediacy of the floods, and there will be many difficult months ahead as the clean-up and recovery from this natural disaster gets under way.” Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Australia is the lucky country “our lands are girt by sea”. With most Australians living on the coast, we sometimes experience extreme storms/rain events. The rain that we witnessed up and down the coast in March affected many. We all try to prepare well to avoid property damage during these events, but heavy rain and wind can test any home. What can we do to be prepared?

10 WAYS TO GET YOUR HOUSE READY FOR STORMS

Clean your gutters. When gutters are clogged with leaves and debris, water overflows and spills down where it can damage walls and footings. If your house is beneath many trees, it’s smart to clear gutters at the beginning of the season, and then clean them again after the first rain to remove leaves and debris that wash down from the roof.

Check your roof, skylights, and flashing. The roof is the most obvious point of entry for rain. Have you got cracked roof tiles or loose screws in metal sheeting.

Repair gutters. Fix loose, sagging, or leaking gutters and make sure downspouts carry drainage well away from the house.

Inspect the house siding. Check for damage, cracks, and holes. Seal up leaks with paintable Filler. Make sure the paint is in good condition. If it isn’t, consider getting the house painted before winter really sets in.

Weatherstrip windows and doors to seal out drafts and minimize heat loss.

Consider buying a generator. In the event of a power outage, a portable emergency generator can provide enough power to keep a few important lights and appliances running. When not in use keep it safe and easily accessible in a storage space. You will find Self Storage Sydney options by going on www.kss.com.au Sydney Storage units are cost effective and there is no lock in rent period.

Cover and protect outdoor furniture, barbecues, outdoor equipment, and firewood with heavy tarps. Secure the tarps with ropes or heavy objects such as bricks.

If your property is in danger of being flooded, have materials such as sandbags or concrete edgings on hand to divert water to drainage areas.

Have trees trimmed, especially if they have become weakened by drought. When laden with rainwater, weak trees can snap or become easily uprooted.

Be ready for the worst. Assemble a disaster supply kit and have it readily accessible. Scan and store important documents on a USB or hard drives located away from your home (or In the Cloud) Store some emergency items in moving boxes (makes it easy to stack). Consider insurance; be aware that your home may become flooded even if it isn’t located in a high-risk area.

Kennards Self Storage is not immune from these situations either. There are two ways Kennards Self Storage deals with this.

The first is prevention. Each and every Kennards Self Storage building is maintained. We have contractors come on site to carry out preventative maintenance to roofs drainpipes. It is mainly about cleaning roofs and gutters of debris before the rain comes.

The second thing is also very important. Persistent heavy rain can cause a flood. In these situations Insurance is very important.
