We are officially in a recession. Bushfires in the Summer followed by Covid-19 has created a very difficult economic environment. Many people with solid careers have found themselves in a dire situation looking for work whilst managing debt. For most of us the largest debt we have is our shelter. Will The Real Slim Dusty Please Stand Up!

Ever wondered about what goes on in an old building? Or what the history of an old building is? There are so many buildings with historical significance that get knocked down and replaced with modern structures. We sometimes forget what we had.

On the corner of 2 Parramatta Road and Columbia Lane there is still an old building standing with some interesting History. The name Columbia Lane is the first clue.

A long History

The site was originally built in 1921 by Gold’s Hoisery Mills LTD. The building changed hands in 1924 when Gold’s Hoisery went bankrupt. The site was purchased in 1925 by Columbia Gramophone and used as a record pressing plant and recording Studio. They even renamed the lane to Columbia Lane in 1926. The Governor of the time Sir Dudley de Chair officially opened it on the 14th of October 1926.

In 1931 Columbia Gramophone Company was bought out by EMI. It was one of the only recording Studio that survived the great depression and was the only record producer in Australia

Running a Business During Covid

Running a small business is tough work in the best of times. We all remember that light bulb moment where the idea of your business is born.

You put your thoughts into action and before you know it you are signing Leases, coming up with a business name and in many cases ordering stock or buying the infrastructure you need to get started. You get some good clients and then you get a stream of income coming in.

With success comes some more cost. You will need to have space for your stock and deliveries. Having convenient easy access space to get your supplies sorted so that you can process orders quickly or get to job sites quickly is vitally important to running an efficient business so that you do not end up working 15 hours a day.

We have all been learning to live with Covid 19. Life is not the same as it was a year ago. We have one eye on getting on with our lives and another on “saving” our lives.

By now we have all learned how to stay Covid safe. Wash your hands regularly, keep 1.5 metres distance from others and limit these experiences to 15 minutes or less. Self Storage Prices Wollongong

Congratulations!! You bought a house, or you sold one! There are many reasons we move homes in our lives and we do it a lot.

The Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) report from the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research is the result of three consecutive years’ survey covering 7,682 households and 19,914 individuals, with adult members of each household interviewed annually. The report shows that 25.3 per cent of the people who were interviewed in all three years had moved house at least once since their first interview in 2001.The overall average time spent at the current address is about ten years, but people between the ages of 20 and 35 stay in the same place for shorter periods than older people. The average length of time for a 25 to 34 year old to stay in one home is around four years, compared to approximately 20 years for those over the age of 65.The HILDA Survey shows that frequency of moving house is related mainly to income, age and whether children are part of the household.

Once you do move home you may need to hold your goods in a secure location for a period of time. Storage Facilities like Kennards Self Storage Wollongong aim to solve this part of the equation by providing spaces that can accommodate all sorts of things.

Renovators Dream

Owning a property is one of the largest challenges we all face. Finding the right place then getting a loan to purchase, then going through the ordeal of securing the purchase can make anyone go mad.

Once purchased we then usually go into renovation mode. From freshening up the paint to changing the flooring from that horrible carpet from the 80’s are usually the first jobs we get to. We all strive to improve our lifestyle and improving where we live is a part of that.

The other side of the story is selling an old tired home. How do we get top dollar for our old place. Improving the sale price is what everyone wants. The challenge here is to spend some money to improve the sale price but not to spend that much that it negates the money that goes into your pocket at the end. Improving the kerb appeal of your home is a good cost-effective way to start adding value.

The last thing you want is to have a little one find Santa’s suit in mum or dads cupboard prior to Santa’s arrival.
